Markdown in ChatGPT, Claude and every AI chat

Ever noticed AI answers arrive with headings, bold, bullet lists, tables? That's markdown. Every major AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, all of them) reads and writes markdown natively. The chat window just renders it.

This isn't a UI choice someone made. Models were trained on oceans of markdown (all of GitHub, for a start), and markdown is close to the minimum syntax that adds structure to plain text, which also makes it cheap in tokens. Markdown is, in effect, the native language of the AI era, and knowing that unlocks some genuinely useful moves.

Get raw markdown out

• Copy button: in most chat apps, the copy action gives you the underlying markdown, not the rendered text. Paste into Obsidian, GitHub, Notion – structure intact. (Paste into Word… condolences. See the holdouts.)
• Ask for it visibly: "output as raw markdown in a code block" when you want to see the source itself.
• Specify the flavour: "use GitHub-flavoured markdown", "no HTML", "wikilinks for internal references" – models happily comply.

Feed markdown in

Paste markdown at an AI and it understands the structure, not just the words: these headings are sections, this is a table, these are sub-points. A markdown document is a better prompt than the same text with formatting stripped.

This goes further than one document. A folder of markdown notes is something an AI tool (Claude Code, Codex and friends) can read, search, edit and reorganize directly. Your notes become a workspace the AI operates in. We use this constantly: see using AI to edit your Obsidian notes.

The universal converter trick

Because AI speaks markdown natively, every AI chat is a free format converter:

• "Convert to WhatsApp formatting" / "Slack-friendly please"
• "Turn this messy Word-paste into clean markdown"
• "Extract the tables from this text as markdown tables"

Markdown is the hub; every app dialect is a spoke; AI does the translation for free.

Why this matters beyond chat

The AI era quietly settles the format wars. When your notes, docs and knowledge bases are markdown, every AI tool can work on them directly, with no export, no plugin, no lock-in. When they're in a proprietary format, there's an API and a permissions dialog between your content and your tools.
